It's better than calling it the Nothing. when it gets called that, I expect Arteyu and Falcor to ride in and save the day.

So... I'm running the PBW (Play by Wave) with a few of the MS board members. Not much has really happened just yet. Because of real life and whatnot, I've not been able to get much up. But, a few things have been set in motion already. Basically all that's happened thus far is the introductions to the City of Lies, a parade in the new magistrate's honor, and a giant feast held by Hyobu. I had some planned out stories already... however, the actions of the players (and they'll be scratching their heads at this one as they haven't taken many actions yet at all) have brought up new ideas and storylines I wish to pursue.

And, I was given the greenlight to screw with their characters. the only restrictions, of course, were don't take the characters away unless they themselves performed actions to deserve so (Example: I can make a character Lost so long as he willingly embraced Shadowlands, but I can't just give him the taint out of nowhere and take his character away) and so long as I don't take away advantages and such. All pretty basic stuff. My intention is not to kill or torment characters. Just to push the bounds of opposition to make the stories lively and (hopefully) more interesting and fun for the players.

I have yet to decide if I will run "Night of a Thousand Screams" or "The Opium war."

Currently, we have a Kakita Courtier, an Otomo Courtier, a... Tortoise (Kasuga?) Courtier (who just joined and will be introduced to the others really soon), and a Kitsuki Magistrate. The Kitsuki is my NPC. He's supposed to be an investigator, but I decided that I wanted to keep things as easy for me as possible, so I made him a Courtier, just so all I had to do was work out of the main book. He has defense and kenjutsu... Tada! Investigator.

I use the term "magistrate" very loosely in my game. It's more of a political position, not "Cops." The players are there because of family ties, not prowess with a blade or catching bad guys. Hyobu has the Thunder Guard for catching bad guys. the players are mostly just the eyes and ears of the Emerald Champion (Satsume, since this is pre-SCC).

We have a great group of characters. All are interesting characters, really. I just hope they all have fun.

If you run Night of a 1k Screams, they will all die. There is no ifs, ands, or buts. It is the single most combat intensive adventure out there, and parties of rank 3+ bushi often have a hard time finishing it with out a huge PC death toll. I would HEAVILY modify the adventure if you even DREAM of running it for Courtiers, and even then expect them to all die. Seriously. I could go into detail via PMs, but... Read through it first and look at the Stats of the Foe and the Solution.

Yeah, I'll agree with Akodo Akira here. Though my party got a bit lucky; Even though the party refused to parley with the Ise-Zumi not feeling like decyphering his riddles, and thus not getting valuable clues, the Bayushi bushi put on the porcelain mask during the fight with Chizaro no Oni and got paralyzed, and the Akodo tactician fell into a coma because of the sword, only the Badger bushi ended up dying… but both the Iuchi Shugenja and the Akodo tactician got a dose of the Taint… The Akodo tacticia brother's a Kitsu shugenja-trained Akodo, later died when he accompanied Meishozo Nisei (Asahina Yajinden) alone to deliver the mask of Iuchiban to the Lion Clan…

On an unrelated matter; we should really have a Spoiler tag…

I've read Night of a Thousand probably more than any single other L5R book. I know it intimately. And I wouldn't run it until they were much higher level than the recommended rank 3. Thanks anyway, though.

I Ran it once many years ago..the group i was running it for got to the warehouse, to discover Chizaro sitting in the cicrle of candles..Hodei was about to monolog about what happened, and after the first sentence " You won't even hurt it. Fools." the Dragon Bushi took offense and promptly took his head...

the rest of adventure went off screen, and the Governor of the city was not impressed when she heard the story, of how the investigation was bungled (leading to more sub plots)..the thunder guard had a busy night though lol
